Week 1 Aug 21-27

As the cliche goes, the hardest part of a journey is the first step, or something like that. This class, my ultimate class in my college career, entrust us students with a daunting task, creating our own film. I spent part of last semester and the entire summer thinking about what was ahead of me, and getting started was really a relief. I was able to dive right in, with my director, and start of with a bang.

Knox and I filmed out first interview for the project in Charlotte, NC last weekend. Aaron helped us revise our initial checkout list, and added a few things that would help us out, like the camera shoulder mount, the LCD viewer assist screen, and plenty of spare batteries. We ended up without one important thing, the mounting plate to fix the camera to the tripod was missing. We were able to improvise, and hopefully learned to check our equipment more thoroughly. We explored the community with the camera and got some potential B-roll footage, as well.

Knox had already suggested including other forms of media in our documentary, besides just video. In class the idea of using our connection for animations along with our subjects passion for poetry seem to fit with that idea really well. A poem along with an animation could serve as a useful tool to communicate the personal tone we hope to include in the documentary.
